Ensuring people are provided with high-quality care that results in positive experiences is essential, says Person Centred Software.
It’s important to understand that people in care have individual needs and preferences. Equally, it’s important to ensure they always receive high-quality, person-centred care delivered in a way and at a time that suits them. Tailoring care to each individual’s needs helps create a positive and enjoyable experience for those in care.
When older adults transition to a care home, getting to know them well and understanding how to tailor their care to their needs is crucial. Empowering people to live life on their terms, respecting them as individuals and actively listening to them all help to enhance their care experience.
For example, if a resident has been a gardener for most of their life, they might want to participate in gardening activities or have indoor plants in their bedroom. Similarly, someone who used to be a writer might want to join creative writing or poetry classes.
In addition, providing residents with a designated space for worship or prayer is essential for those with religious or spiritual beliefs. It’s also important to accommodate their dietary needs during religious festivals and encourage them to keep religious items, such as prayer beads or holy books, in their rooms.
Although understanding residents’ needs and preferences may seem simple, it can significantly impact their quality of care and improve their experience of care.
Assessing people’s experiences of care
The Care Quality Commission (CQC) has introduced a new single assessment framework that takes into account people’s experiences when auditing a home. CQC’s strategy is committed to delivering regulation driven by people’s needs and experiences of care.
Here are a few ways the CQC will gather people’s experiences:
- Carry out surveys of people who use services at regular intervals.
- Proactively seek out experiences that people are already sharing with others, including with providers, trusted online spaces and other sources.
- Encourage and support those who provide and organise care services to proactively and continuously promote ways for people to give feedback. This includes CQC’s ‘give feedback on care‘ service and care providers’ own communication channels (website, SMS text, email or display at the premises).

Ways to improve residents’ experiences of care
According to Age UK, the latest data shows that for those over the age of 65:
- Over half a million (579,803) experience anxiety disorder.
- Just under half a million (487,100) experience a major depressive disorder.
- Just under 200,000 (191,740) experience a chronic depressive disorder.
- Over 140,000 (140,332) experience bipolar disorder.
These statistics emphasise the importance of ensuring that all individuals receiving care get the adequate care and support they need.
Apart from receiving proper care, there are many other things care professionals can do to help boost residents’ moods and connect with others. Even if residents don’t feel motivated to do them at first, trying them out may lead to benefits that motivate them to continue and improve their experience of care.
You’re probably aware that a person-centred approach is essential to improving an individual’s care experience. Several other things can also contribute to this goal – including, but not limited to, staff training, fostering a community culture, implementing a digital social care record system and creating a homely environment. However, a few innovative technologies are becoming increasingly popular among care providers to enhance the care experience for individuals.
Person Centred Software, a market leader in care management software and provider of the UK’s most widely used digital social care record (DSCR) system, mCare, is dedicated to improving the lives of those receiving care and those working in the sector.
It achieves this by helping care providers improve care delivery, enhance resident experience, boost ratings with the regulators and streamline operations with its Connected Care Platform, a one-stop shop covering the full spectrum of care management through integrated solutions that help drive outstanding care.
Whether it’s a DSCR system, an eMAR system or a solution that helps maximise care home staffing, each solution (which can be used separately or in combination with others) is designed to address a particular part of care.
Although all of Person Centred Software’s solutions contribute to enhancing the quality of resident care in some way, ResHub and the Oomph! On Demand wellbeing and activities platform stand out for their exceptional ability to make the residents’ experience more fun, enjoyable and engaging. These solutions ensure that residents thrive in their living environments, eventually leading to a better quality of life.

What’s the Oomph! On Demand wellbeing and activities platform?
This wellbeing and activities platform for residents and staff is a streaming service that hosts ready-to-deliver content in a range of formats, including live sessions with singers, dancers and relaxation specialists.
The platform, created specifically for the social care sector by experts in wellbeing, mental health, dementia and nutrition, also provides activity packs for residents, support materials for staff, reminisce newspapers specially designed for older adults and people living with dementia, themed calendars, Oomph TV (which includes live exercise classes, activity sessions and videos from expert partners), a worldwide radio platform with over 110,000 radio stations (FM, AM and internet) and podcasts from 130 countries, giving residents the freedom and opportunity to tune into the stations that they love.
This platform boosts the physical and emotional health of those living in care and enables staff to save 8-10 hours per week, which they can use to spend quality time with those they support.
Furthermore, the platform is focused on accessibility features, meaning no user is excluded from benefiting from the content. From colour contrast to text size to text-to-speech, it’s built to support everyone.
The Oomph! On Demand wellbeing and activities platform also integrates with mCare, (Person Centred Software’s digital social care record system), allowing care teams to track, plan and review the impact activities have on those they care for. Managers can measure the outcomes for residents quantitatively by tracking and measuring their engagement with the activity programmes, which helps with CQC compliance and exceeds regulations. The activities can also be logged as care notes in mCare.
The Oomph! On Demand wellbeing and activities platform has become increasingly popular within the care sector due to its positive impact on the quality of life for older adults. Over 2,100 care homes across the UK are utilising the platform, providing essential resources and activities to 105,000 residents every year. By offering a wide range of personalised content and interactive experiences, the wellbeing and activities platform helps residents to live and thrive rather than just exist.
