The Government is seeking views on a new Carers' Strategy. In the Carers' Strategy consultation description, the Government says, ‘We think that we need a new strategy for carers that sets out how more can be done to support them. It needs to reflect their lives now, their health and financial concerns, and give them the support they need to live well while caring for a family member or friend.

‘To help us develop the strategy, we want to hear from carers, those who have someone who care for them, business, social workers, NHS staff and other professionals that support carers.’

Heléna Herklots, Chief Executive of Carers UK, said, ‘The new Carers’ Strategy has come at a crucial time. All of us will be touched by caring in our lifetime, whether we take on a caring role or we need care ourselves. The Carers’ Strategy must deliver on strengthening support, value and respect for carers.

‘More unpaid care than ever is being provided by family and friends, at the same time that we are having children later in our lives and our working lives are being extended. Our public services need to adapt to this evolving world with a step-change in the support available for families.

‘Cuts to social security and local care services mean that carers are finding it increasingly hard to look after themselves and to care well for their loved ones. As a result, carers will be looking for the strategy to deliver greater financial security, including better support in the workplace, as well as quality, reliable health and care services.

‘We welcome the development of the Carers’ Strategy and its ambition to improve support for carers across all areas of their lives. Carers need a strategy matched by action that delivers concrete improvements to their lives.’

The survey asks for people’s experiences with caring and there are specific questions about types of support and how helpful they are. There’s also an opportunity to include additional information. The whole survey is estimated to take 30 to 45 minutes.

The consultation opened on 18th March and runs until 30th June. The dedicated web page for the consultation is available on the Department of Health’s website here.
