Why good leadership is crucial to creating the right culture in a care setting

In this month’s podcast episode, Co-host Professor Martin Green OBE, Chief Executive of Care England, explains the difference between leadership and management and highlights why it’s essential that every member of the workforce has a clear vision to work to. With regards to the regulator, he says that the CQC will look for a sense of devolution in terms of power and autonomy within the workforce. Podcast guest Kathryn Smith, Chief Executive of Social Care Institute for Excellence (SCIE), shares her opinion on the role of leadership with regards to retaining good staff and explains how effective leadership can bolster the care workforce. Kathryn also discusses how regular supervision with staff is a sign of good leadership and tells listeners that leaders should invest in co-production and involve people with lived experience to strengthen service delivery. Kathryn and podcast guest, Samantha Crawley, Chief Executive of Bracebridge Care, agreed that showing vulnerability and humility as a leader is key. Samantha says leaders should be ‘brave’ and Professor Green OBE echoed Samantha’s view that those in senior positions should lean in to times of crisis to overcome challenges with the team. Professor Martin Green OBE

Martin Green has had an extensive career in NGO development, both in the UK and internationally, and is Chief Executive of Care England, the largest representative body for independent social care services in the UK. He is also Chair of the International Longevity Centre, a Trustee of the National Centre for Creative Health (NCCH), Vice President of The Care Workers Charity, Champion of The National Aids Trust and Commissioner of the Royal Hospital Chelsea. In 2013 he was appointed Visiting Professor of Social Care to Buckinghamshire New University. In 2012, in his role as Department of Health and Social Care Independent Sector Dementia Champion, he led the development of the Dementia Care and Support Compact for The Prime Minister’s Challenge on Dementia. In 2008 he was named care personality of the year and was awarded an OBE for Services to Social Care in the 2012 Queen’s Birthday Honours List. In 2019 he was presented with the Health Investor Outstanding Contribution award.

Kathryn joined SCIE in May 2020. She was Chief Operating Officer at Alzheimer’s Society and before that, Director of Services at Scope. Kathryn has worked in social care since 1989, including within the private sector, a health trust, four different local authorities and the Commission for Social Care Inspection. She has also taught various social work courses for Leeds University and the Open University. At Scope Kathryn was Director of Services. Kathryn has previously been a governor for a primary school in Leeds and was Chair of the Guidance Develop Group for Hospital to Home Transitions for the NICE Collaborating Centre for Social Care. Kathryn lives in Yorkshire with her three sons and enjoys horse riding and spending time with her family. Kathryn has personal experience of dementia through her late Grandfather and Great Aunt and ran the marathon for Alzheimer's Society in 2015. Kathryn is passionate about embedding co-production and working in a strengths-based way to find solutions that work for people.
